Northern Kentucky Tri-ED Welcomes Cliff Reed

Northern Kentucky Tri-County Economic Development Corporation (Tri-ED) announced that Clifford A. Reed has joined the organization as Assistant Director of the Northern Kentucky ezone. He will work with Casey Barach, Senior Vice President of Entrepreneurship at Tri-ED and ezone Director, as part of the Northern Kentucky office of the Kentucky Innovation Network.

“Cliff brings valued experience, determination and drive to our economic development team,” said Dan Tobergte, President and CEO of Northern Kentucky Tri-ED.

Prior to joining the ezone, Reed was the Chief Financial Officer for Turfway Park, a thoroughbred racetrack in Florence, Ky. Reed formulated and executed business strategies as part of the senior management team that included financial planning, budgeting, financial reporting, human resources, risk management, information systems, and compliance with industry and governmental regulations. In addition, he worked closely with bankers, attorneys and accountants.

“One of the largest hurdles that the founders of startup companies face is putting together an accurate and reasonable financial plan for the business and potential investors,” Barach said. “In addition to his valuable executive experience and contacts from throughout the Greater Cincinnati region, Cliff’s financial expertise will be invaluable as we work to help companies that are commercializing a new product, technology or process in Northern Kentucky.”

Previously, Reed was associated with several companies in Greater Cincinnati, including Price Waterhouse, Arthur Andersen, and Chiquita Brands, where he held the positions of Senior Audit Manager, Controller and Director of Financial Reporting.

A lifelong resident of the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati area, Reed earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Kentucky. He is a former member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, both the Kentucky and Ohio Society of CPAs, and the National Association of Management Accounts. He is also a past president of the Leadership Northern Kentucky Alumni Association.

What do you do in your new position at Artworks?
My focus is on supporting creative entrepreneurship in Cincinnati. Whether creatives need business model training, like our CO.STARTERS class, or are looking for funding to grow their business, like our ArtWorks Big Pitch event, the Creative Enterprise team is committed to helping form a solid ecosystem for starting a business in Cincinnati.

What do you like best about this job?
Being a former creative entrepreneur, I get to take what I learned and encourage others in their own path into entrepreneurship. After graduating from DAAP, I opened a vintage shop [Atomic Number Ten] on Main Street in Over-the-Rhine. After being in business for four and half years, I decided to close the shop with the goal of finding a gig that I could help others start their own businesses. Luckily, it all came together in my role at ArtWorks.

What's great about living/working in Cincinnati?
First of all, it’s my home; I was born and raised here. I may not have always seen its potential, but now I’ve come to appreciate Cincinnatians’ hardworking, down-to-earth attitudes and the passion and support they are capable of showing for their city. And that’s what’s kept me here. Plus, there are so many amazing people putting their heart and souls into making Cincinnati a vibrant place to live and own a business, and I’m grateful to get to be a part of that transition.

What part of town do you live in, and what do you most like about the neighborhood in which you live?
I live in Over-the-Rhine and have been here almost five years now. Besides having an awesome community of residents and business owners, I like that it’s never boring. I’m constantly noticing new things about the neighborhood, and it’s inspiring to see how much it’s already grown since I first moved here.

What do you do in your new positions as partner at Ulmer & Berne and as President of the Greater Cincinnati Venture Association?
As a lawyer, my primary focus is on helping angel and venture-backed companies build comprehensive intellectual property portfolios. As president of the GCVA, my primary mission is to help connect “funders” and “founders."

What do you like best about this job?
I am passionate about entrepreneurship and working with entrepreneurs. I am constantly surrounded by our best and brightest, and it’s rewarding to play even a small part in the success of a new venture.

What's great about living/working in Cincinnati?
The explosion of our entrepreneurial community. Our city has the resources and the talent to create and build world-class companies. And we are doing it.

What part of town do you live in, and what do you most like about the neighborhood in which you live?
I live in Mariemont, and it’s pretty tough to beat walking to Graeter’s and seeing a movie at the Mariemont Theatre. I’m also excited that we now have the 50 West Brewing Company close by, which has an incredible brunch.

What do you do in your new position as marketing communications manager at Ahalogy?
I develop and execute marketing and PR plans for the company, build company messaging, handle media and investor relations, and lead communications with our stakeholders and key influencers.

What do you like best about this job?
What I love about my profession is that it combines two of my passions; I get to read and write every single day. What I love about Ahalogy is the culture that our founders have created. Every single employee has a say in how the company is growing.

What's great about living/working in Cincinnati?
Cincinnati is “right-sized.” It’s a big city with major institutions and companies, but not so big that you can’t make the personal connections with people and leaders that you need to succeed.

What part of town do you live in, and what do you most like about the neighborhood in which you live?
I live in Oakley and I love the location. I’m a short drive from all the restaurants, bars and entertainment that downtown and Over-the-Rhine offer, but can still take advantage of the walkability and locally owned small businesses in Oakley and Hyde Park.

What do you do in your new position at Roadtrippers?
It’s a startup! A bit of everything. We experiment. We fail. We learn. We repeat this until we hit on something. It’s like panning for gold. We are looking for those one or two nuggets of learning about our customer that lets us do Big Things. It’s fun!

What do you like best about this job?
Roadtrippers is about planning your “Great American Roadtrip." To plan travel is to dream. We’re a company of dreamers and misfits who love road travel; who’ve decided we can change for the better how people discover America. How cool is that?

What's great about living/working in Cincinnati?
Cincinnati is so unique. Its influence on the rest of America is completely underrated. Yes, it’s an awesome place to raise a family. Cost of living is not crazy here. But with OTR, it’s finally attracting young folks who are craving a hip, urban environment. It’s been a missing piece of our puzzle that’s finally falling into place. We also have a parade for our baseball team every spring! Who does that?

What part of town do you live in, and what do you most like about the neighborhood in which you live?
Mason. Yeah, OK. Suburblandia. But it’s great. I’ve been really impressed by the way they’ve managed the growth from being a very popular suburb. Ever been to the community center? Or the high school? Yeah, it’s big, but the level of services they offer is amazing. I’ve lived in Atlanta suburbs, and have seen how suburbs can really struggle with growth. Mason is a case study in how to manage it well. And the commute? Again, ever been in Atlanta traffic? The Mason-Cincy commute is nothing in comparison.

What do you like best about this job?
The new learning experiences, and the opportunity to be involved in a great product.

What's great about living/working in Cincinnati?
Being able to watch the city develop. It’s awesome to be able to see new shops, restaurants and bars pop up. It’s wonderful to be able to be a part of that, working at a local startup and helping fuel that growth.

What part of town do you live in, and what do you most like about the neighborhood in which you live?
I live in Northern Kentucky, Fort Wright to be more specific. I really like the area that I live in. It’s a great location, close to just about everywhere I need to go. It’s close to work, only about a 15-20 minute drive to work.

What do you do in your new position at Roadtrippers?
I work on a team that develops the Roadtrippers iOS app. I spend a majority of my day problem solving and writing code. I’ll also test and debug any problems that are found with the app.

What do you like best about this job?
Definitely the environment. Everyone I work with is laid back and easy to get along with, yet they’re very passionate about their work. This leads to a nice mix of getting work done while having fun at the same time. You sort of feel closer to everyone here. It’s not like a standard workplace where you go to a holiday party out of obligation. Here, you go to a holiday party because you want to hang out with everyone. Also, our office is located in an old brewery in OTR. The combination of an old brick building being furnished with modern technology is really interesting.

What's great about living/working in Cincinnati?
There are so many reasons I love this city. The amount of history this city has fascinates me. I’m always trying to learn anything I can about Cincinnati. I’m originally from a small, “dead” town in northeast Ohio. There wasn’t much to do there and I grew up thinking that was the norm. I was blown away when I moved to Cincinnati and saw how much there was to do. There are so many locally owned restaurants and shops, and you can always find some form of entertainment. Above all, nothing beats going to Reds and Bengals games. Having actual local sports teams (competitive ones, too) to root for is all a sports fan like me could ask for.

What part of town do you live in, and what do you most like about the neighborhood in which you live?
I live in the Pleasant Ridge area. I like it because it’s really close to everything. I can get to Kenwood, Oakley or Hyde Park in five minutes, and downtown is only a short 15 minutes away. The people in my neighborhood are friendly, and the old German architecture of all of the houses is amazing to look at. No two houses are the same.

What do you like best about this job?
The culture balances a fun, positive, connected atmosphere with being totally focused on the quality and experience of the project. It’s evident in the product.

What's great about living/working in Cincinnati?
There’s so much going on here! The restaurants are better, the shops are bigger, there are museums, a zoo and several of my favorite music venues.

What part of town do you live in, and what do you most like about the neighborhood in which you live?
I live in Hyde Park area. I’ve really enjoyed the snow and Christmas decorations on all the gorgeous homes. When it warms up, I’m really looking forward to exploring the area on foot and checking out the local coffee and art spots.
