Cincinnati bids to lead green roof movement

The Dayton Daily News reported Cincinnati is going green and they’re starting at the top. On October 1st, Cincinnati’s City Council became the first in the state with a plan to direct grants and loans to residents and businesses so that they can replace shingled roofs with pastoral roofs.The green roof movement boomed in Europe but has been slow to penetrate cities in the U.S.; Cincinnati could become a leader in the movement if all goes according to plan.

Funding for the vegetation takeover would come from about $5 million a year in below-market-rate loans through the U.S. EPA Clean Water State Revolving Fund as well as an undetermined amount of grant money from other U.S. EPA funds.
