Cincinnati’s grandest old department store is now its hippest new loft apartments!

Even before the Civil War, The John Shillito Co. on Fourth Street was the primary shopping destination for the gentry of Cincinnati. Thanks to its popularity, John Shillito looked northward for a new and grander home soon after the War. In 1876, he commissioned James L. McLaughlin to design a palace of retailing which would be the equal of any in New York or Boston. The building that now stands on Seventh Street is the result.
