Boone County Awarded Outstanding Parks Department in Kentucky

Boone County Parks and Recreation Department has reason to celebrate. They were honored as the Outstanding Department for 2009 at the Kentucky Recreation and Park Society conference in Louisville. Director David Whitehouse accepted the award on behalf of the county. This award is given to only one department in the state of Kentucky.

Boone County is an ever growing community with a population of over 115,000. As the County grows,
so does the demand for programming and events to fit the needs of our residents. The Parks
Department works diligently to offer everyone with recreational and leisure opportunities. During the
last year, 31,089 participants registered or participated in programs. Over 12,000 youth participated in
sports programs and over 11,000 people attended the Union Pool.

Judge/Executive Gary Moore said, "This is an outstanding accomplishment! I commend the Parks and Recreation Staff for their commitment to Boone County's citizens. I am proud of this honor."

The Parks Department currently consists of 17 facilities averaging over 1,901 acres of dedicated parks
and recreation space. Facilities are maintained by the Parks Maintenance staff.
