Local jobs at GigitJobs.com

What do you do in your new position as executive chef at Local 127?
I have the staff do a deep clean along with myself. We all scrub every nook and cranny together. It’s a great team-building exercise, and you get a feel for and know your new co-workers. In this business, as a leader you need to be willing to do everything it takes. It builds camaraderie and you see who is lazy!

What do you like best about this job?
Eating amazing food every day and having the ability to be exposed to so many ingredients. Teaching what I have learned to others.

What's great about living/working in Cincinnati?
It’s a tight group of chefs and everyone knows one another—makes it fun. The amazing purveyors and farmers we get to work with. The Reds!

What part of town do you live in, and what do you most like about the neighborhood in which you live?
I live in Licking River in Covington. It's a beautiful historic district that’s close to downtown, and I can walk to work. I cross the Roebling bridge every day and see the Queen City.

What do you do in your new position at Roadtrippers?
It’s a startup! A bit of everything. We experiment. We fail. We learn. We repeat this until we hit on something. It’s like panning for gold. We are looking for those one or two nuggets of learning about our customer that lets us do Big Things. It’s fun!

What do you like best about this job?
Roadtrippers is about planning your “Great American Roadtrip." To plan travel is to dream. We’re a company of dreamers and misfits who love road travel; who’ve decided we can change for the better how people discover America. How cool is that?

What's great about living/working in Cincinnati?
Cincinnati is so unique. Its influence on the rest of America is completely underrated. Yes, it’s an awesome place to raise a family. Cost of living is not crazy here. But with OTR, it’s finally attracting young folks who are craving a hip, urban environment. It’s been a missing piece of our puzzle that’s finally falling into place. We also have a parade for our baseball team every spring! Who does that?

What part of town do you live in, and what do you most like about the neighborhood in which you live?
Mason. Yeah, OK. Suburblandia. But it’s great. I’ve been really impressed by the way they’ve managed the growth from being a very popular suburb. Ever been to the community center? Or the high school? Yeah, it’s big, but the level of services they offer is amazing. I’ve lived in Atlanta suburbs, and have seen how suburbs can really struggle with growth. Mason is a case study in how to manage it well. And the commute? Again, ever been in Atlanta traffic? The Mason-Cincy commute is nothing in comparison.

What do you do in your new position at Roadtrippers?
I work on Roadtrippers.com, our web application for planning road trips and discovering awesome places to visit.

What do you like best about this job?
How quickly we can add a cool new feature, or fix an obnoxious bug, and then get that improvement in front of our actual users. Users who are not shy about e-mailing us their opinions of our product. Before moving to Cincinnati, I worked for one company where it could literally take years for the work we did to end up in front of our customers. Here at Roadtrippers, it only takes a few hours or days.

What's great about living/working in Cincinnati?
There is always something interesting going on, especially in the summer, when it seems like there is at least one festival or outdoor concert happening every single day.

What part of town do you live in, and what do you most like about the neighborhood in which you live?
My wife and I moved downtown in June, and we love our location. We walk to Reds and Cyclones games, we walk to the Aronoff, we walk to Fountain Square, and we walk to bars and restaurants. Once it warms up, I will probably start walking to work. I feel a lot happier (and healthier) when I can walk to most of my daily activities. The only time I really need to drive anywhere is to buy groceries in Newport or Hyde Park.  As more people chose to move downtown, I'm optimistic that even that drive will one day not be necessary.

Bleuzette Marshall

Bleuzette Marshall Named UC Chief Diversity Officer

A nationwide search has led to the appointment of a veteran UC administrator to leadership of the university’s diversity efforts.

University of Cincinnati President Santa J. Ono has appointed Bleuzette Marshall as UC’s Chief Diversity Officer, effectively immediately. Marshall, who holds three degrees from UC, including a Ph.D. in educational studies, will serve on the President’s Cabinet and the President’s Executive Committee.

“Since assuming the role of Interim Chief Diversity Officer in January 2013, Dr. Marshall has worked tirelessly to build enduring relationships across the institution as well as within the broader community,” Ono said. “In the process, she has developed an unmatched understanding of the university’s opportunities, issues and organizational dynamics. Every step of the way, she has proven herself to be a gifted listener, a strategic thinker and, most importantly, a trusted partner. I am confident that Dr. Marshall will take our diversity and inclusion efforts to the next level.”

A University of Cincinnati alumna, Marshall has worked at UC and the UC Foundation for nearly 21 years, starting in Ethnic Programs and Services, at the African American Cultural and Resource Center, and in development at the UC Foundation. Since 2004, her work at the Foundation has taken her from Director of Development to Senior Director of Development. Since the inception of the position of Chief Diversity Officer in 2007, she has assisted that office and the President’s Diversity Council.

“As a respected member of the UC administration with more than two decades of experience in advancement, alumni affairs, diversity and inclusion, facilitation, organizational development, project management, student affairs and teaching, Bleuzette has gained an awareness of UC culture that will be essential in moving our university forward as we continue to implement the Diversity Plan,” Ono said.

Ono noted that Marshall had led several successful fundraising initiatives benefiting the Darwin T. Turner Scholars Program, developed an affinity-based giving program for African American alumni, and served as a key organizer of the Onyx & Ruby Gala—a formal recognition ceremony honoring distinguished alumni of color. She also developed a system of accountability to enhance diversity and inclusiveness practices throughout the university, designed and co-chaired the university-wide diversity conference for three years, and conducted and analyzed a university-wide diversity assessment.

“I’m thrilled by the opportunity to serve my alma mater in such a meaningful way and am excited by the possibilities that lie ahead to better our best. I look forward to continuing my work with university and community members to make UC the model of inclusive excellence,” Marshall said.

On January 20, Marshall was honored with the King Legacy Award at the 39th annual King Legacy Awards Breakfast hosted by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Coalition and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center at the Freedom Center.

What do you do in your new position at Roadtrippers?
I work on a team that develops the Roadtrippers iOS app. I spend a majority of my day problem solving and writing code. I’ll also test and debug any problems that are found with the app.

What do you like best about this job?
Definitely the environment. Everyone I work with is laid back and easy to get along with, yet they’re very passionate about their work. This leads to a nice mix of getting work done while having fun at the same time. You sort of feel closer to everyone here. It’s not like a standard workplace where you go to a holiday party out of obligation. Here, you go to a holiday party because you want to hang out with everyone. Also, our office is located in an old brewery in OTR. The combination of an old brick building being furnished with modern technology is really interesting.

What's great about living/working in Cincinnati?
There are so many reasons I love this city. The amount of history this city has fascinates me. I’m always trying to learn anything I can about Cincinnati. I’m originally from a small, “dead” town in northeast Ohio. There wasn’t much to do there and I grew up thinking that was the norm. I was blown away when I moved to Cincinnati and saw how much there was to do. There are so many locally owned restaurants and shops, and you can always find some form of entertainment. Above all, nothing beats going to Reds and Bengals games. Having actual local sports teams (competitive ones, too) to root for is all a sports fan like me could ask for.

What part of town do you live in, and what do you most like about the neighborhood in which you live?
I live in the Pleasant Ridge area. I like it because it’s really close to everything. I can get to Kenwood, Oakley or Hyde Park in five minutes, and downtown is only a short 15 minutes away. The people in my neighborhood are friendly, and the old German architecture of all of the houses is amazing to look at. No two houses are the same.
