What do you do in your new position at Artworks?
My focus is on supporting creative entrepreneurship in Cincinnati. Whether creatives need business model training, like our CO.STARTERS class, or are looking for funding to grow their business, like our ArtWorks Big Pitch event, the Creative Enterprise team is committed to helping form a solid ecosystem for starting a business in Cincinnati.

What do you like best about this job?
Being a former creative entrepreneur, I get to take what I learned and encourage others in their own path into entrepreneurship. After graduating from DAAP, I opened a vintage shop [Atomic Number Ten] on Main Street in Over-the-Rhine. After being in business for four and half years, I decided to close the shop with the goal of finding a gig that I could help others start their own businesses. Luckily, it all came together in my role at ArtWorks.

What's great about living/working in Cincinnati?
First of all, it’s my home; I was born and raised here. I may not have always seen its potential, but now I’ve come to appreciate Cincinnatians’ hardworking, down-to-earth attitudes and the passion and support they are capable of showing for their city. And that’s what’s kept me here. Plus, there are so many amazing people putting their heart and souls into making Cincinnati a vibrant place to live and own a business, and I’m grateful to get to be a part of that transition.

What part of town do you live in, and what do you most like about the neighborhood in which you live?
I live in Over-the-Rhine and have been here almost five years now. Besides having an awesome community of residents and business owners, I like that it’s never boring. I’m constantly noticing new things about the neighborhood, and it’s inspiring to see how much it’s already grown since I first moved here.

What do you do in your new position at Manley Burke LPA?
I provide legal advice and resolve business disputes for clients as practically as possible, ideally without litigation. If a lawsuit is necessary, then I handle the matter efficiently: working hard to try to get my client the best possible outcome, at the earliest opportunity, with costs that are reasonable and predictable.

What do you like best about this job?
I was previously an in-house attorney with a major local company, and I enjoy bringing that in-house perspective to my new role as outside counsel. I understand that clients expect excellent legal work. But, more than ever before, clients also need practical advice with predictable costs. I enjoy that, as outside counsel, I am able to provide exceptional legal services consistent with budgetary frameworks those in business are required to manage daily.

What's great about living/working in Cincinnati?
What’s great to me about Cincinnati is how accessible things are. I don’t know where else in the country you can have a quiet house with a yard that is 15 minutes from major league sports, 15 minutes from world-class museums, music, theatre and dance, 15 minutes from high-end shopping and 30 minutes from an international airport. Add in the new energy in downtown and OTR, and there is no place like Cincinnati.

What part of town do you live in, and what do you most like about the neighborhood in which you live?
I live in Hyde Park and love the summertime Hyde Park Farmers' Market.

What do you do in your new position at PB&J?
Ensure that our client’s message is concise and consistent across all touchpoints.

What do you like best about this job?
I like the challenge of figuring out why our clients are in business—what is it that excites them about their brand? That’s what we extract to help them tell compelling stories and craft great experiences.

What's great about living/working in Cincinnati?
Cincy’s a bustling town but not impossible to live in. I’ve built a respectable network here—there is a lot of talent in Cincinnati. But it’s not outrageously expensive or impossible to get around and park. Cincinnati is a great hub for business and also accessible enough (a day’s drive) to many other exciting cities.

What part of town do you live in, and what do you most like about the neighborhood in which you live?
Eden Park. It’s a great central location in town (with a view!), making it easy to get pretty much anywhere in a decent amount of time.

Dr. Rebecca Porterfield

Jobs powered by GigitJobs.com

Geoffrey S. Mearns, president of Northern Kentucky University, announced that Dr. Rebecca I. Porterfield has been named dean of the NKU Haile/US Bank College of Business. Dr. Porterfield currently serves as graduate associate dean of the University of North Carolina Wilmington Cameron School of Business. She will begin at NKU on July 1.

“We look forward to having Rebecca lead our college of business,” said Sue Ott Rowlands, NKU provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “She brings expertise and leadership that will help us to build upon the strengths of our excellent academic programs and to achieve our vision of transdisciplinary education at every level and across the university.”

As dean of business, Porterfield will lead a college of four departments—accounting, finance and business law; construction management; management; and marketing, economics and sports business. The college enrolls 1,900 undergraduate majors and 214 graduate students taught by 70 full-time and part-time faculty members. The college is AACSB accredited and offers 10 bachelor’s degrees, including unique programs in entrepreneurship, sports business, and construction management. Master’s degrees are offered in business administration, accountancy, and executive leadership and organizational change.

“This is an exciting time to be joining the Haile/US Bank College of Business,” Porterfield said. “Under the leadership of President Mearns and Provost Ott Rowlands, NKU is poised to sustain the momentum it has gained over the past decade. The college of business is an integral part of the Greater Cincinnati business community, and I look forward to building on existing relationships and establishing new ones.”

Mearns said Porterfield brings experience at virtually every level of a college of business. “She started as an assistant professor at UNC Wilmington and methodically moved up in its Cameron School of Business, learning to manage a large academic organization at every level,” Mearns said. “We are pleased to welcome her—the future of the Haile/US Bank College of Business has never been brighter.”

Porterfield has served as graduate associate dean of the UNC Wilmington Cameron School of Business since January. In her current role, she oversees the school’s graduate programs, international programs, outreach centers, and marketing and communications. She previously served in a number of roles within the school, including undergraduate associate dean, director of international programs and director of assessment, associate vice chancellor of academic affairs, associate dean, department chair, MBA director, associate professor, and assistant professor.

During her tenure at UNC Wilmington, she has co-founded the first dual undergraduate degree program in the nation; initiated and founded a mentoring program with former Fortune 100 executives; created a concierge service for the school’s top 25 employers; developed and expanded online programs for departments across the university; and restructured the MBA program, resulting in a dramatic increase in completion rates. She was an honorary fellow at the University of Applied Sciences in Bremen, Germany, in 2006, and was named UNCW Global Citizen of the Year in 2008.

Her teaching areas include both graduate and undergraduate classes in international management, global strategy, and strategic management. She has directed more than 150 professional MBA graduate team practica. In 2004, she was the inaugural recipient of the UNCW Alumni Outstanding Faculty Member award. Porterfield previously served as assistant professor at Hofstra University and Mississippi State University.

Porterfield earned a B.S. in Management and an MBA in Management from Mississippi State University, a Ph.D. in Industrial Management from Clemson University, and a Management and Leadership in Education (MLE) certificate from Harvard University.

What do you do in your new position at Forza Marketing?
I lead and manage public relations and marketing initiatives on behalf of Forza for clients locally, nationally and in Canada.

What do you like best about this job?
It was important to me to find a position that was a good fit for my life, my beliefs and my work ethics. I was particular in choosing companies and organizations to apply. I believe I have found the right position with Forza. I have the opportunity to write and to strategize, both of which I enjoy. And the people are beyond fantastic.

What's great about living/working in Cincinnati?
This is my first time working in the city, having spent my entire career thus far working in Northern Kentucky. I am truly enjoying learning more about the city and visiting the local attractions and restaurants.

What part of town do you live in, and what do you most like about the neighborhood in which you live?
I love in Florence, Ky., with my husband and four children. Florence, and Northern Kentucky in general, offers the best of two worlds. My neighborhood is tucked away from the roads and the noise and offers a safe place for kids to play while also offering the proximity of conveniences such as grocery stores, the mall, and restaurants and local attractions.

What do you do in your new position at Forza Marketing?
In addition to speaker sourcing for the annual COLLOQUY Summit and writing and pitching media for LoyaltyOne, I also serve as Forza’s resident social media expert, and handle the social media for two of our local clients, Local 127 and Rookwood Pottery.

What do you like best about this job?
Small agencies are nimble by nature, and Forza is staffed by great people who know their stuff and get things done. I also learn something new every day, which is fantastic. Everyone here takes so much pride in their work, and nothing goes out the door that we don’t stand behind.

What's great about living/working in Cincinnati?
The urban core of Cincinnati is changing rapidly, and it’s so exciting to see. Recently Cincinnati and the greater Cincinnati area have been getting some great press, and it is well-deserved. I also like how Cincinnati can be such a small town sometimes. Most of the time I don’t go far without bumping into someone I know—and that’s (usually) a good thing!

What part of town do you live in, and what do you most like about the neighborhood in which you live?
I live downtown and actually have one of the shortest commutes ever—it’s only half a block from my condo to Forza. That means no snow days for me, though. I’ve lived downtown for about four years now, and it’s amazing. I’m very excited about the changes coming in the next few years.
