'Color Purple' brings Cincinnati native home

Cincinnati native Darius Crenshaw will be touring through Cincinnati with "The Color Purple" as it makes its second visit here.  The SCPA grad credits his former teachers for getting him to Broadway.

The Grammy-nominated musical features gospel, jazz, pop and blues and is based on Alice Walker's novel about a woman who finds emotional peace after a trial-filled life in rural Georgia in the early 1900s.

Cincinnati researchers hope they've found gene therapy cure for sickle-cell anemia

Researchers at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center may have discovered a way to use gene therapy to cure sickle-cell anemia after a decade of research work.

Using lab animals and human tissue samples, scientists have been able to develop the cutting-edge treatment for a disease that affects 70,000 to 100,000 people in the United States. The hope is to receive federal approval to move forward with human testing next year.

Tucker's Restaurant Worth the Money

Gourmet Magazine has scoured the Midwest and come up with a list of nine great restaurants that are well worth the money and your business.  In Cincinnati, Tucker's - in business 60-plus years -made the list.

Gourmet mentioned that part of the allure is Tucker's location in the "perpetually burgeoning" Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, and its combination of over-sized omelets, delectable BLTs, and its interesting vegetarian version of huevos rancheros.

Ohio's Governor Endorses Legislation Written by UC Law Students

University of Cincinnati College of Law students have put together legislation that would help prevent wrongful convictions.  The legislation has received the support of Governor Strickland and the Ohio Senate.

If passed, the legislation would require the preservation of DNA evidence in all cases of serious crime, establish a standard that requires the recording of all interrogations from beginning to end in cases of serious crime, require police lineups and eyewitness photo ID procedures to be conducted in double-blind fashion, and expand Ohio's current post-conviction DNA testing law to allow for DNA testing to be done during the parole phase of the justice cycle.

Preview new bike-hike trail in Nky

The first section of the Licking River Greenway and Trails project is offering the opportunity for bikers and nature hikers to take in the new trail from 16th Street to Holmes High School along the Licking River.

The Licking River Greenway and Trails project is a component of Northern Kentucky's Vision 2015, and is part of a larger master plan that includes hiking/biking trails and parks along both sides of the Licking River in Kenton and Campbell counties, and from the Ohio River to the Interstate 275 bridge five miles south.

Pinta, Nina arrive in Newport

Replicas of the famous Christopher Columbus ships, the Pinta and the Nina, have arrived in Cincinnati. Both boats are docked on the Northern Kentucky riverfront where tours will be available until October 5 for just $7.  The Nina was built by hand and is considered to be the most historically accurate Columbus replica ever built.  The Pinta was recently built in Brazil and is a larger version of its predecessor.

The two ships will be open to the public for self-guided tours every day from 9am to 6pm on Riverboat Row in Newport.  Scheduled tours are also available for teachers looking for a guided student tour by a crew member.

UC grad becomes first to bike through 48 states

Phil Nagel, a 23-year-old recent graduate from the University of Cincinnati completed an 8,200 mile bike ride across the country on Saturday, September 13.  In the process Nagel has become the first cyclist to ride through all lower 48 states.

Nagel began the journey roughly two months ago on July 20 in Tipp City near Dayton, Ohio and had intended on completing the route in 48 days.  His goal was set back due to inclement weather and detours.  Overall Nagel's route was nearly four times as long as the famous Tour-de-France.

Governor supports DNA access bill

A new DNA access bill supported by Ohio Governor Ted Strickland is aiming to fight wrongful convictions at the highest level.  Concerns about funding and the overall use of DNA testing still exist as the bill tries to gain full support.

The legislation followed a five-day investigation from the Columbus Dispatch that exposed flaws in Ohio's prisoner DNA-testing program and identified 30 cases that were prime candidates for testing.  With the help of Cincinnati-area lab DNA Diagnostics Center and the University of Cincinnati College of Law's Ohio Innocence Project, files were built on the more than 300 prisoners who applied for testing, most of which previously had been denied.

Amtrak: All-Ohio train would draw 478,000 riders

Amtrak has released a study that shows a plan that would restore passenger rail service between Ohio's largest cities would draw close to a half-million riders annually by hitting key demographics.

The study also identified $517.6 million in potential costs to get the service running between Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, and Cleveland with two auxiliary stops in northern Cincinnati and western Cleveland.

The last private train service to operate from Cleveland to Cincinnati ended in the early 1970's.  The 255-mile route is one of the most heavily populated corridors without rail service in the Midwest and boasts high population densities and a large population of college students.

UC to host international research conference on Berlin Wall

Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, its anniversary will be bolstered by two major events in Cincinnati: an international research conference and the unveiling of a permanent display of a section of the wall in Cincinnati.

The University of Cincinnati has been designated by the German Embassy as one of a select handful of collegiate partners in the "Freedom Without Walls" celebration.  The highlight of the UC events will be a research conference entitled, "November 9, 1989 - The Fall of the Berlin Wall, Twenty Years After," which will include presentations from scholars from all over the world.

CVG ad deal seeks to boost revenue

As airports across the nation look for ways to boost revenue, the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is capitalizing on the advertising potential of its corridors, waiting areas, and baggage claims.

With 35,000 people a day passing through those areas, the space is well-suited for advertising.  As a result CVG is doing a top-to-bottom makeover of its signs and displays, and intends to pitch itself as a premium venue for big-ticket advertisers.


The new approach will reduce the number of advertising displays by nearly half, and will install new, liquid crystal display screens that will be more visually arresting.  There will also be new backlit displays and lightboxes including a 7-by-23 feet display composed of 15 LCD screens.

Alltech names ten Kentucky Ambassadors for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2010

Ten Kentuckians have been selected and commissioned by Alltech to represent the company and advance the message of the games.  The ten men and women come from all across the state and will play an instrumental role during the event.

The selected individuals represent each of the Commonwealth's congressional districts and are tasked with representing Alltech in their hometowns and surrounding communities.  Part of that task will be to convey the message about global animal health and nutrition during the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

Gregory Williams, City College President, to head University of Cincinnati

The University of Cincinnati has selected Gregory Williams, former head of the City College of New York, as their new President after Dr. Nancy Zimpher took the chancellor position with the State University of New York earlier this year.

The City College of New York is considered to be the flagship of the larger City University of New York system which boasts 11 senior colleges. During Dr. Williams' tenure, City College grew 60 percent to over 16,000 students.

In addition, his administration strengthened admission standards at the traditionally diverse institution which counts more than 87 percent of its undergraduate and graduate students from racial minority groups.

Cincinnati Cheetah breaks speed record

An eight-year-old cheetah named Sarah from the Cincinnati Zoo broke the speed record for land animals by covering 100 meters in 6.13 seconds.  The previous record was held by a South African cheetah which covered the distance in 6.19 seconds in 2001.

The cheetah ran on a specially designed course at the Cincinnati Zoo's Regional Cheetah Breeding Facility and was chasing a lure.  The record was set on Sarah's second attempt, although the South African record was also broken on her first.

Live from Cincinnati: It's Chad Ochocinco vs. Skip Bayless

ESPN took its popular First and 10 morning show to Cincinnati this past week to welcome a special guest host - Chad Ochocinco.  Ochocinco took on regular host Skip Bayless who has been vocally critical of the football star during the show.

As the special guest host, Ochocinco discussed a variety of topics with Bayless.  The two foes also had a direct exchange where they discussed Bayless' position on stars like Ochocinco, Shaquille O'Neal and fellow controversial wide receiver, Terrel Owens.
