Potterhill Homes banks on Green Building

Since 2001 Potterhill Homes has seen residential Green building go from a trend to a sustainable way of living for a growing number of Cincinnati homeowners.

The Milford-based company was founded to offer affordable, environmentally friendly housing. Potterhill specializes in installing geothermal heating and cooling and is delving into solar panels.

"We have been a green builder for several years, and think it’s the responsible way and the right way to build. We try to stay ahead of the curve," said company president Carolyn Rolfes.

The company started with five employees, and now has 16, including three hired in the past year.

You'll have two places in Northside to see their work in LEED Certified home building this year. Potter Hill is on the verge of starting its new 25-home Northwind community. The model home will feature solar panels, a first for a Potter Hill home.

"We're very close to purchasing lot in next couple of weeks. We are in permits to build our model home. It's going to be LEED Certified, and it is eligible for a 15-year tax abatement in City of Cincinnati," Rolfes said.

They'll also have a home in this year's CityRama in Northside, starting June 1. The home is already sold, Rolfes said.

"Northside is the perfect fit. The people who live and want to live in Northside, they just get green," Rolfes explained. "In most other locations we are educating the homeowners. In Northside, they're having a discussion with us and encouraging the dialogue. It's fun to build in a place where way we build is completely understood."
