Author Kathleen Cox asks "Where Yah from in the States?" as she shares letters written by her mother, a Red Cross volunteer who ran World War II enlisted Men's Clubs in Africa and Italy from 1943 to 1945. Visit the up and coming neighborhood of DeSales Corner in East Walnut Hills for a free evening of openings as independent businesses and galleries along Woodburn Avenue showcase art, jewelry and food. Listen for the bell, "Big Joe" in DeSales Church, that was the largest free-swinging bell in the world in 1900. Legend says that the bell would break the windows in the neighborhood when it rang; it is now operated by hammer. Support your local art community and add to your personal collection.

20 Years/20 Artists Exhibition
August 6 through September 23
Art Academy of Cincinnati, 1212 Jackson Street

Sponsored by the Art Academy of Cincinnati, the City of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Arts Allocation Committee, 20 Years/20 Artists is a celebration of the first 20 years of the City of Cincinnati's Individual Artist Grant Program (1989-2008) and is the first exhibition to exclusively feature works by City artist grant recipients. Thirty-five pieces of recent works by two media artists and 18 visual artists will be on exhibit in the Art Academy of Cincinnati's Pearlman and Chidlaw Galleries. Artwork includes videos, paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture and mixed-media installations. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Who gives a sh@%? Evidently Brennan Bradford does. Fabricate features the opening reception for Comfortably Constipated on Saturday, August 14th from 7 - 11 p.m. In this new installment, artist and illustrator, Bradford, a Fairfield native residing in Norwood, ponders the aforementioned oxymoron and his overall intrigue with restrooms and other facets of life via collages, illustrations, paint and found objects that collectively work to tell a story of past and present culture. Head to the after-party at Mayday featuring You, You’re Awesome and Moon Pool & Dead Band of Detroit.

Take Me Out- An All American Pastime

Spend a summer day with the family and challenge yourselves with board games from 1960 to 2010 including life-size Candy Land, swing in the interactive Wii batting cage, play cornhole, listen to the story of Casey at Bat and other great baseball tales, catch our first place Cincinnati Reds broadcast live and enjoy an all-American cookout from 5:00-10:00 p.m. The festivities will continue on Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Free event; $4 parking for non-members.
