Growing Companies

Union Springs Pharmaceuticals (USP) has found its niche.

USP's mission is to "protect those who protect us," says company president, Joel Ivers.

USP is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Drug Enhancement Company of America based in Union, Kentucky. It licenses, develops and commercializes cutting edge, over-the-counter pharmaceutical products.

Although consumers can buy USP's products through their Website, by nature, they sell primarily to those who are routinely put in risky situations and sketchy environments where pathogens roam freely.

This group includes those working in healthcare, law enforcement, corrections and all manner of first responders.

USP's products are particularly useful to first responders "when they're exposed to some sort of body fluid by an accident victim or someone who's sick," Ivers says.

And demand for USP's protective goods remains high, even in this economy.  The release of a new product is indicative of this resilience.

Alongside its first released product – a protective spray called MyClyns that can be applied to the face, eyes, mouth, nose and ears – USP has just launched ViralClyns 95.

It began with MyClyns. "There were all sorts of products that were alcohol-based products or iodine products; all sorts of things you can wash your hands with," Ivers says.  "But we figured out that we could create the first product [MyClyns], put it in a spray container and sell it."

MyClyns was developed by a California-based firm then refined by USP.  With USP's tweaking, the spray was modified so that it could be sprayed into sensitive areas like the eyes and mouth.

The product is doing very well.  Since its launch in early 2008, USP has sold MyClyns to over 1,200 municipalities in the US as well as a plethora of government organizations, military and correctional facilities.  USP was recently given the green light to begin selling it in Europe, as well.

"We've already received orders from folks in Europe," Ivers says.  "We're beginning to market our products over there."

In a similar fashion, USP licensed ViralClyns from an outside company and plans to market it heavily to first responders and healthcare professionals.  Interested consumers can also buy it through USP's website.

ViralClyns is a respirator with a twist. This new item is a revolutionary respirator that not only blocks germs, but even inactivates viruses, bacteria, protozoa and fungi that try to infiltrate its 99.99% effective protection system.

"To our knowledge, this is the only respirator on the market that filters out viruses," Ivers says.

With a clear niche market and a string of successes under its belt, USP plans to continue developing its niche in the market place as a leader in products that keep our protectors safe.
